Eating Disorder

At Singapore Counselling Centre, our counselors realize that Eating Disorder might affect you, your youth, and your relationship with the surrounding. Eating Disorder is a group of conditions reflecting one’s unhealthy relationship towards food. It tends to develop during the teenage and young adult years.

No one knows its exact causes, but it appears to coexist with psychological and medical issues such as; low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, etc.

Below are 3 main types of eating disorders:

  • Anorexia Nervosa – People with anorexia nervosa have an extreme fear of gaining weight. They often starve themselves and exercise relentlessly. Anorexic people have a distorted image of their body image where they think they are overweight where in fact they are underweight. This may cause damaging health effect such as; brain damage, multi-organ failure, bone loss, and infertility.
  • Bulimia Nervosa – Symptoms of this eating disorder are eating a large amount of food followed by purging (vomiting or using laxatives). Unlike people with Anorexia Nervosa, people with Bulimia are often a normal weight, but they have the image and intense fear of gaining weight, as they see themselves as ‘fat’.
  • Binge Eating Disorder – Individuals who suffer from Binge Eating Disorder usually lose control over his or her eating portion. Unlike those who suffer from Bulimia Nervosa, episodes after binge-eating are not followed by compensatory behaviors such as, purging or fasting. Therefore, people who are suffering from BED may be obese and his or her risk of developing other conditions such as cardiovascular disease increases rapidly.

If any of the symptoms sound familiar or if you notice your friends, colleagues or family members displaying some of the symptoms above, talk to us and we will work towards overcoming the issues that you or your loved one may be facing.
