This often due to a distorted body image and fear of gaining weight.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals with anorexia nervosa tend to view themselves as overweight despite usually being (severely) underweight, causing them to enforce drastic self-imposed food restrictions that affect their body\u2019s ability to function well. While this disorder is frequently associated with females, males are also not immune to it. The stigma of help-seeking and the condition&#8217;s characterisation as a predominantly feminine disorder cause many male cases of anorexia to go undiagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>Anorexia Nervosa often occurs together with <a href=\"https:\/\/scc.sg\/e\/depression-what-causes-symptoms-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> (<a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2165\/00023210-200620080-00004\">2<\/a>)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, panic and <a href=\"https:\/\/scc.sg\/e\/anxiety-symptoms-causes-treatment\/\">anxiety disorders<\/a>, substance abuse, low self-esteem and extreme perfectionist mentalities (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/perfectionism-in-anorexia-nervosa-1138391\">3<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"anorexia2\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-6  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, individuals with anorexia nervosa tend to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have low body-mass index (BMI)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experience amenorrhea (absence of menstruation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently check in the mirror for flaws<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeatedly weigh themselves<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have rigid eating rituals (such as measuring proportions\/calories of food)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to poor\/restricted diet, individuals also often experience disruptions in blood pressure (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhelp.net\/eating-disorders\/characteristics-of-anorexia-nervosa-continued\/\">5<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brittle nails and hair, fatigue and weakness, insomnia and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"anorexia4\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-8  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Causes <span class='special_amp'>&amp;<\/span> Risk Factors of Anorexia Nervosa<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Biological, psychological and social factors influence an individual\u2019s decision to restrict food. Recent research also suggest genetics to be another possible factor contributing to an individual\u2019s vulnerability towards the condition, due to unstable or excessive responses to stress that are related to impulsive\/emotional eating.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologically, individuals who are more vulnerable to the condition are generally more anxious, tending to feel a heightened sense of uncertainty. As such, when perceiving situations around them, they may be more likely to focus disproportionately on negative feedback. Controlling one\u2019s diet and appearance is often a means to manage their <a href=\"https:\/\/scc.sg\/e\/anxiety-symptoms-causes-treatment\/\">anxiety<\/a> and increase their sense of control. Social pressures and expectations for thinness are also contributing factors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"anorexia5\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-10  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Usually, the first step for treatement would be to restore the individual\u2019s physical health and mitigate the risk of death before managing his\/her psychological health. For example, heart rhythm disturbances, dehydration and imbalances may require treatment. Additionally, further psychiatric problems or severe malnutrition due to the continued refusal to eat may require hospitalisation. As such, the treatment for anorexia may involve:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A primary care doctor<\/strong> who provides medical care and supervises calorie needs and weight gain<\/li>\n<li><strong>A psychologist or other mental health professional<\/strong>, who works with the individual to develop behavioral strategies to help him\/her return to a healthy weight<\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychotherapy<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Family-based therapy<\/strong>: This form of therapy for adolescents enables parents to help their child with refeeding and weight restoration until the child can make good choices about their health<\/li>\n<li><strong>Individual therapy<\/strong>: Research suggests ognitive behavioral therapy \u2014 specifically enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy \u2014 to be effective for adults. The main goal is to normalise<em> eating patterns and behaviors<\/em> to support weight gain.
