It is normal and healthy to feel anxious when you find yourself facing a worrying situation \u2014 an exam, a speech, or an interview, for example. It is necessary for our survival as it helps us plan and prepare for potential danger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety turns unhealthy, however, when it gets severe and causes distress that disrupts your daily life. It may further develop into an anxiety disorder when individuals experience intense and persistent anxiety (for more than 6 months) at a level disproportionate to the actual threat that ultimately interferes with their daily life [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/s0140-6736(16)30381-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders\/\">3<\/a>]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is vastly different from the normal levels of worry and stress that one may experience as a result of life challenges (refer to <a href=\"#faq\">FAQ<\/a> for more).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"types\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Types of Anxiety Disorders<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorders are generally characterised by having unrealistic, irrational fears or anxieties of disabling intensity. The type of disorders differs from one another in the types of objects or situations that induce fear, anxiety, or avoidance behaviour, and the associated cognitive ideation. This means that there are situations that we have come to associate as anxiety-inducing. When a particular situation (e.g., a child witnessing her parents fight at dinner) happens frequently enough, an initially neutral event (e.g., having a family dinner) may accidentally become a cue that causes the child to anticipate something threatening and unpleasant to happen, in turn causing the child to feel anxious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our thoughts and images can also serve as conditioning stimuli capable of eliciting the fear or anxiety response pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the risk factors for each type of anxiety disorder vary, researchers have found that both genetics [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0134865\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a>]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and environmental factors add to the risk of developing an anxiety disorder [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/s0140-6736(16)30381-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a>]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some general risk factors that put individuals at higher risk of anxiety disorders include: [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders#part_145335\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a>]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to stressful and negative treatment or events [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016%2Fj.ynstr.2019.100191\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a>]<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traumatic childhood, or harsh or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overprotective<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parenting styles [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0140-6736(16)30381-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a>]<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of anxiety or other mental illnesses in biological relatives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some physical health conditions, such as thyroid problems or heart arrhythmias, or caffeine or other substances\/medications, can produce or aggravate anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personality traits were also found to influence the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of anxiety disorders. Individuals who possess temperamental traits of shyness or behavioural inhibition during childhood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders#part_145335\">3<\/a>]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or were overly self-critical, or experienced a lot of negative thoughts and feelings as young adults [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10615806.2020.1845431?journalCode=gasc20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a>]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were found to be at increased risk of suffering from anxiety and <a href=\"https:\/\/scc.sg\/e\/?page_id=5732\">depressive disorders<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"treatment\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-18  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_heading  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Treatment for Anxiety Disorders<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-19  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_textblock  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Pscyhotherapy<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most often, psychotherapy is most helpful in helping individuals identify negative thought patterns and trigger situations that give rise to anxious feelings, and develop more positive coping strategies to cope with those anxious feelings or anxiety-inducing situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is often used to facilitate the process of identifying their personal feeling-thought-behaviour loop of the anxious thoughts that lead to certain behaviours, which in turn impacts how a person continues to feel and think. Examples of SSRIs are escitalopram (Lexapro) and fluoxetine (Prozac).
