Dementia can manifest as memory loss, confusion and poor reasoning. AD is a brain disorder whereby neurons decay and brain mass shrinks. The symptomlogy is progressive\u2013 around 7 to 10 years between diagnosis and end-of-life\u2013 and can be broken into mild, moderate and severe stages. [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/162\/1\/65.short\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] Certain factors, including high alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, decreased muscle mass, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, heart disease and atrial fibrillation, raise the risk of developing AD. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2413-4155\/3\/1\/16\">5<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newer research has found that <strong>maintaining a healthy lifestyle<\/strong> that protects the brain\u2019s infrastructure can help prevent AD development. This consists of <strong>keeping physically active<\/strong> and following a <strong>diet low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables<\/strong>. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2413-4155\/3\/1\/16\">5<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  id=\"alzheimers4\"  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Treatment for Alzheimer\u2019s <\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make an AD diagnosis, doctors may perform brain scans or analyse a patients\u2019 cerebrospinal fluid to investigate for the presence of amyloid deposits. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/how-alzheimers-disease-treated#:~:text=Aducanumab%20is%20the%20only%20disease,brain%20lesions%20associated%20with%20Alzheimer's.\">6<\/a>] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with <strong>no straightforward cure<\/strong> for AD, treatment focuses on mitigating symptoms. Several drugs, such as galantamine, rivastigmine and donepezil, are prescribed to control mild to moderate symptoms. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/how-alzheimers-disease-treated#:~:text=Aducanumab%20is%20the%20only%20disease,brain%20lesions%20associated%20with%20Alzheimer's.\">6<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only drug to target underlying causes of AD is <strong>Aducanumab<\/strong>, and it aids in reducing amyloid plaques in the brain. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/how-alzheimers-disease-treated#:~:text=Aducanumab%20is%20the%20only%20disease,brain%20lesions%20associated%20with%20Alzheimer's.\">6<\/a>] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, researchers are carrying out clinical trials of drugs targeting amyloid \u03b2 and tau-proteins in the brain, as they have been associated with cognitive decline.
