What is Codependency?<\/h2>

Codependency is an informal<\/strong> term referring to the dysfunctional<\/strong> relationship between a codependent and an enabler<\/strong> [1<\/a>]<\/span>. The codependent engages in cycles of unhelpful and destructive<\/strong> behaviour, while the enabler takes on the role of constantly<\/strong> caring for the codependent. The enabler is often caring at the expense of personal needs<\/strong>, perpetuating the codependent\u2019s unhealthy<\/strong> behaviour. <\/span><\/p>\n

Codependent relationships are contrasted<\/strong> with healthy dependence, where care and support are mutual<\/strong>, and neither party\u2019s life revolves around each other<\/strong>. This can occur between friends, family or romantic partners with neither role fixed<\/strong> as both parties may exhibit codependency at various points. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n

How does Codependency Develop?<\/h2>

Codependency is more likely to manifest in those who experienced adverse<\/strong> family relationships, childhood trauma<\/strong> or live in close<\/strong> proximity with one another [2<\/a>]<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some might be accustomed<\/strong> to saving and protecting others, thus being more vulnerable<\/strong> to \u201cenabler\u201d roles within codependent relationships. Others might have grown up in difficult family environments lacking love and nurturance<\/strong>, causing them to crave<\/strong> the experience of leaning on others for support<\/strong>. As a result, they are more susceptible<\/strong> to \u201ccodependent\u201d roles in relationships. <\/span>When codependents meet enablers and vice versa, codependent relationships form. These relationships are sustained over time as both the codependent and enablers achieve<\/strong> their needs either to save or be saved as a result of the relational dynamic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to note, however, that there is no fixed way<\/strong> towards forming a codependent relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n
