It could be a tight deadline at work, or the mountain of household chores waiting for us at home. Feeling stressed is a common emotion that many people can relate to. However, stress can reach a point where it starts to get unhealthy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our\u00a0 mindsets (ie. the way we perceive things) are a big factor that affects our stress levels\u00a0 \u2014 and one example of an unhelpful mindset worth rethinking is that of\u00a0 perfectionism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >What is Perfectionism?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfectionism is a term loosely used in social settings to describe family or friends who focus on achieving perfect outcomes. However, that is not solely what perfectionism entails. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfectionism involves a tendency to set standards that are unattainable or that can only be met with great difficulty. Perfectionists often have difficulty seeing situations in perspective as they tend to believe that anything short of perfection is unworthy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often hold perfectionist attitudes out of two broad motivations (which are not mutually exclusive): excellence-seeking and failure-avoidance. Excellence-seeking perfectionism is where people are driven by extreme achievements and have excessively high standards; in contrast, failure-avoiding perfectionism is where people are motivated by a fear of failing to meet \u2018perfect\u2019 standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div  style='height:20px' class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_two_third  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/p>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfectionism is driven largely by internal pressures. This comes from the ingrained belief that only perfect results are worth the effort, a manifestation of the All-or-Nothing thinking pattern, where nothing other than perfect is accepted. Such a mindset could arise from childhood when good results are overly praised or poor results are constantly disapproved of. As a result, we may develop thoughts that our self worth is based on our achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_one_full  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-10  el_before_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >How Does Perfectionism Lead to Stress?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfectionism leads to stress when people believe that they\u2019re valuable only because of what they achieve or do for others. This leads them to push themselves (and their teams) hard, and eventually it becomes counterproductive as the pressure to achieve a standard of perfection leads to high levels of stress and <a href=\"https:\/\/scc.sg\/e\/anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-12  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-13  el_before_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Signs of Perfectionism<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some signs of a perfectionist. You&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe your self-worth is determined by your achievements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">procrastinate regularly because you\u2019re afraid that you\u2019ll be unable to complete a task perfectly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggle to relax and share your thoughts and feelings for fear of it being \u201cwrong\u201d or imperfect<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are seldom (or never) satisfied with the work that you produce\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have unrealistically high expectations for yourself and others and tend to fixate on ideal standards<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-15  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_third  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-16  el_before_av_hr  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >How Can I Manage My Perfectionist Tendencies?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<div  style='height:1px; margin-top:-15px'  class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-17  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-18  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_textblock  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >1. Replace self-critical or perfectionistic thoughts with realistic and helpful statements.<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfectionists are often very critical of themselves. Even if you do not believe them right away, enough repetition will turn positive realistic thoughts into a habit, and help crowd out the negative self-talk. Some examples of positive realistic statements include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNobody is perfect!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll I can do is my best!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaking a mistake does not mean I\u2019m stupid or a failure. It only means that I am like everyone else \u2013 human. Everyone makes mistakes!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay not to be pleasant all the time. Everyone has a bad day sometimes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-20  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >2. Be kind to yourself and practise self-acceptance by lowering unrealistic standards you set for yourself. Learn to encourage yourself rather than operate out of fear of imperfection. If you are still motivated and doing your best, celebrate that!
