Family Conflict

Families are made up of people with different personalities, histories, needs, and expectations — and family conflict is an inevitable part of that. But when tension becomes entrenched, when the same arguments keep happening, or when family members feel unheard, dismissed, or estranged, it can take a real toll on everyone involved.

Family conflict can arise in many forms:

  • Parent-child conflict – Recurring tension between parents and children or teenagers around expectations, boundaries, communication, or control
  • Adult children and aging parents – Disagreements about caregiving responsibilities, life choices, or longstanding relational patterns that resurface in adulthood
  • Sibling conflict – Rivalry, resentment, or inequality — real or perceived — between siblings that has never been properly addressed
  • Blended family challenges – Navigating the dynamics of step-parents, step-siblings, and the loyalties and tensions that come with bringing two families together
  • Cultural and generational differences – Clashes between traditional expectations and modern values, particularly in Singapore’s multicultural context where family obligation and individual autonomy can pull in different directions
  • Communication breakdown – Conversations that escalate into arguments, topics that have become too difficult to raise, or a household where people have simply stopped talking honestly with one another
  • Family roles and responsibilities – Conflict around who does what, who carries what burden, and whether those arrangements feel fair

Family conflict is rarely about just one thing. Most entrenched disputes have layers — old wounds, unspoken needs, and patterns that developed long before the current argument began.

At Singapore Counselling Centre, our counsellors work with families to create a space where difficult conversations can happen more safely. Whether you are coming as a family unit or as an individual trying to navigate a difficult family situation, we can help you understand the dynamics at play and find a more constructive way forward.
