Counselling Experience
I signed up for 3 counselling sessions with SCC as part of my company’s Employee Assistance Programme. Even though I am not currently experiencing major issues or distresses in my professional or personal life, I believe that counselling is a good platform for increasing one’s self-awareness and would highly recommend it for anyone seeking personal development.
3 sessions (i.e. total 3 hours of contact time) is short, so I had gone in with a pre-identified topic that I focussed on with my counsellor, Joseph Rajagopal, and had a realistic expectation of what we could achieve in our limited time together. The first session was framing the subject, where I provided background context to the topic and Joseph explained the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model that he would adopt. The second session was understanding the subject. Joseph shared notes and diagrams/charts to explain how our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are all interlinked. He also posed a series of questions that I was to reflect upon via a journaling exercise, which I found this to be very useful. The third and final session was analysing the subject, where Joseph modelled how to dive deeper to identify my core limiting beliefs and provided suggestions as to how to recognise and overcome them.
I came away with a greater sense of personal insight and empowerment, which was all I needed as a springboard to launch forward. Thank you Joseph!
