Emotional Regulation

Emotions are a natural and important part of being human. But for some people, emotions can feel intense, unpredictable, or difficult to manage — swinging quickly, staying for too long, or arriving in ways that feel out of proportion to the situation.

Difficulties with emotional regulation can look like:

  • Intense emotional reactions – Feeling emotions very strongly, or finding that small triggers lead to responses that feel bigger than you intended
  • Difficulty calming down – Staying in a heightened emotional state long after the triggering moment has passed
  • Impulsive behaviour – Acting, speaking, or making decisions in the heat of the moment in ways you later regret
  • Emotional shutdown – On the other end of the spectrum, feeling emotionally numb, disconnected, or unable to access your feelings at all
  • Mood instability – Experiencing significant shifts in mood that are hard to predict or explain
  • Difficulty in relationships – Finding that emotional reactions create friction with the people around you, even when that’s not what you want

Struggles with emotional regulation are not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. They are often deeply connected to past experiences, nervous system responses, and patterns learned early in life as a way of coping.

At Singapore Counselling Centre, our counsellors work with you to better understand your emotional patterns, identify what’s driving them, and develop practical skills to respond rather than react. Approaches may include Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based strategies.

Learning to work with your emotions — rather than against them — can make a meaningful difference across all areas of life.
