Working Together in Restoring a Marriage

We got married in 2017 but in late 2018,  our marriage was on the rocks after a series of incidents. I had strayed and was considering to abandon my marriage while my wife was grieving over the betrayal. Both of us had no idea what to do.

Rather than tiding it over and leaving things to chance, we decided to seek professional help through marriage counseling.

In February 2019, we approached Joseph Rajagopal of SCC for help. Through undergoing both individual and couple sessions in the succeeding months, Joseph made us realized that in actuality, our marriage wasn’t smooth sailing to begin with. He could clearly unfold the underlying problems that accumulated over the years and these came as a surprise to us. We always thought that we had a strong and steady relationship. That being said, with his very calm and assuring demeanor, he told us that all hope was not lost – as long as both partners had the dedication and commitment to make the marriage work.

Through a series of tests, evaluations, discussions and education over a period of 6 months, Joseph helped us to realize our individual communication and love profiles, along with its strengths and weaknesses and the gaps we needed to address to make our marriage work. Though the sessions may sometimes make you feel uncomfortable and make you go through a roller coaster of emotions, we always walked out of the room feeling more confident and reassured.

We are glad to share that after months of hard work, both of us are still working hard to improve our marriage. While we cannot firmly say this is happily ever after, we definitely feel happier and communicate better. We need to continue to work hard for our marriage. Marriage is definitely not a walk in the park and it requires a lot of hard work and communication, this was one of the key points that we took home from Joseph.

Marriage counselling is no silver bullet to a broken marriage, however, we highly encourage people who are facing issues or feeling lost in their marriage to approach SCC and their counselors with an open mind and heart!
